Carnival
February or March, depending on the yearVibrant pre-Lenten celebrations, called Karneval or Maškare, are held in cities throughout Croatia. Rijeka is famous for the size and quantity of its festivities, but Dubrovnik, Samobor, Split and Pag Island also have long-standing carnival traditions, featuring large parades, ceremonies and masked parties.
Zagreb Biennial of Contemporary Music
April, odd-numbered years (next is 2013)Founded in 1961, this prestigious festival is dedicated to new music. Programs include projects from symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles, experimental musical theater, contemporary dance, jazz, electronics and alternative music.

Pula Film Festival
Mid-late JulyFounded in 1954, this is the oldest national film festival in the world, and the most popular film festival in Croatia. Croatian and international films are screened at several dramatic, open-air venues around Pula (including the 1st century Roman amphitheater and the 17th-century citadel).
Motovun Film Festival
Late July-early AugustFocusing on films from countries not traditionally renowned for their film industries, this festival offers open-air screenings in beautiful surroundings and attracts a host of young filmmakers.

Truffle Days
Around central Istria, Sep-OctSep-Oct is high truffle season in the Istrian interior. This series of weekend festivals, fairs and demonstrations, held in Motovun, Sovinjak, Buzet and Livade, celebrates the region's exquisite white truffles and local Teran wine.
