topLake Titicaca
Morning: Board the first-class Andean Explorer train from Cusco to Puno. This spectacular 10-hour ride takes you through the magnificent Andes mountains, the deep Huatanay River valley, and the rolling Andean plains, all visible through your glass-walled observation car.
Afternoon: Arrive in Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, with an elevation of 12,500 feet.
Accommodations: 2 overnights at Hotel Libertador.
Morning: Depart for an excursion on Lake Titicaca to the floating “islands” of the Uros people, accompanied by your personal guide. These islands, as well as the boats and houses, are made entirely of reeds. Continue to Taquile Island, home to Quechua-speaking natives renowned for their hand-weaving techniques. Enjoy lunch and a special dance demonstration, then tour the various pre-Inca archaeological sites around the island, if desired.
Late afternoon: Return to Puno. Dinner at the hotel.
Morning: Depart for the airport. On the way, stop to explore the pre-Columbian site of Sillustani on the shores of pristine Lake Ayumaral. This site is famous for its stone chullpas (circular funeral towers), standing as tall as 39 feet and very complex in their construction, surpassing even the Incas.
Continue to the airport, where you will board your flight to Lima.
Afternoon: Arrive in Lima. Continue on to your destination in Peru, or relax at your hotel until it’s time to depart for your nighttime flight home.
