South America Art Tour
This 11-day tour offers a deep immersion in the South America art scene, from folk and colonial art, to early-20th-century political statements, to the emerging artists now gaining international acclaim. This itinerary will take you to the cosmopolitan cities of Buenos Aires, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. In each city you'll get special access to the best, most exciting art museums, visit the homes of prominent private collectors, tour galleries and artists' studios, and explore world-famous art parks.
You'll be picked up at the airport and taken to the Alvear Palace Hotel.
After check-in, enjoy an orientation tour of Buenos Aires, led by a history and architecture expert. Sights will include the Plaza de Mayo, the Casa Rosado, and the Teatro Colón.
Private evening tour of the Fundación Proa museum of contemporary art.
In the morning, take a guided tour of the Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano, housing an exceptional collection of colonial art. After that, you have the option of meeting with a well-known Argentine artist (such as Ernesto Bertani, Risso Burone, Juan Carlos Liberti or Vivianne Duchini) at their studio.
Lunch hosted by a prominent art collector.
In the afternoon, tour several private art collections such as those of Ignacio Liprandi, Esteban Tedesco, and Juan Verges.
Finish with a visit to Galeria Ruth Benzacar, specializing in contemporary art.
Dinner at Sucre.
In the morning, take a guided tour of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), home to one of the most outstanding surveys of 20th century Latin American art.
Lunch at the museum’s Café des Arts.
In the afternoon, take an exclusive private-access tour of Zurbaran Art Gallery, featuring works by the famous Spanish painter. Or, take a guided graffiti tour, getting to know the vibrant street art of the Colegiales, Palermo Hollywood and Soho neighborhoods, visiting galleries and shops along the way.
Dinner at Cabaña las Lilas or Osaka.
In the morning, you have the option of visiting the extraordinary Cemetario de la Ricoleta, where many of Argentina’s presidents, heroes and heroines are buried. Or, spend the morning at your leisure.
Late morning departure to the airport for your flight to São Paulo.
Mid-afternoon arrival in São Paulo. Check into the Hotel Fasano in the Jardins district.
Dinner at Tordesilhas.
This morning you will visit the contemporary art galleries Galpão Fortes Vilaça, Galeria Forts Vilaça, and Galeria Millan.
Lunch at Prét Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM).
In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the MAM museum and surrounding Ibirapuera Park. This park hosts important art festivals and events throughout the year, such as the São Paulo International Art Fair and the São Paulo Biennial.
Dinner hosted by a prominent local art dealer.
Early morning pickup for your 9am flight to Belo Horizonte.
At the Belo Horizonte airport, you’ll be picked up and driven to INHOTIM in Brumandihno (approx. two hour drive). With 14 galleries and pavilions housing over 600 works of art, this 3,000-acre park is one of the world’s most important centers for contemporary art.
After lunch, take a guided tour of INHOTIM.
In the early evening, you’ll be driven back to Belo Horizonte for your 8:30 flight to São Paulo.
In the morning, take a private tour of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP). Housed in a landmark building, MASP boasts the finest collection of European painting in South America.
Next, visit the Galeria Luisa Strina, one of the city’s oldest and most important galleries for contemporary art.
Lunch at Restaurante Figueira Rubaiyat.
In the afternoon, take a curator-led tour of the Estação Pinacoteca, used for temporary exhibitions of the Pinacoteca do Estado. This will be followed by a tour of the Pinacoteca do Estado (National Art Gallery), housing a wide-ranging collection of Brazilian art.
Evening free.
In the morning, you will be picked up and taken to the airport for your 11am flight to Rio de Janeiro.
Upon arrival, you’ll be taken to A Gentil Carioca Gallery. This artist-run gallery exhibits works by young and emerging art stars.
Lunch at Cais do Oriente.
After lunch, take a tour of the contemporary art exhibit at the Paço Imperial.
Check in to the Hotel Fasano on Ipanema beach.
Dinner at Fasano Al Mare.
In the morning, you’ll be picked up and driven to the Sito Roberto Burle Marx in Barra de Guaratiba (approx. 60 minutes). You’ll take a guided tour of the famous landscape architect’s house, studio and gardens.
Lunch at Quinta.
In the afternoon, you have the option of visiting the Folk Art Museum, considered one of the best collections in Brazil. Or spend the rest of the day at leisure, relaxing on the beach or shopping in the chic districts of Ipanema or Leblon.
Dinner and drinks in the private home of a local artist in the eclectic Santa Teresa neighborhood, with impressive views of the city.
After dinner, head to Rio Scenarium in Lapa for some live samba.
Morning free. If desired, arrange a trip to the top of Sugar Loaf mountain or take a private tour of the Maracanã soccer stadium.
After lunch you’ll be taken to the Museu de Arte Contemporanea (MAC) in Niteroi. Spectacularly located overlooking the ocean, this futuristic-looking museum was designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
Depart MAC and cross Guanabara Bay aboard an old wooden fishing schooner.
Back in Rio, you'll visit the Museu de Arte Moderno (MAM), where you’ll be given a private tour.
Dinner at Aprazivel.
You'll be picked up and taken to the airport for your return flight home.
