Getting Around
Transports Publics Genevois (TPG) provides frequent bus, tram, mouette (boat), and suburban train service to within a block or two of most locations.
As of 2007, all visitors staying at a hotel in Geneva can benefit from the free Geneva Transport Card. This personal and non-transferable pass is established upon check-in and gives the holder unrestricted use of the entire public transportation network (bus, train and boat) for the entire duration of their stay, including the departure day.
Ferries
The local TPG system includes ferry shuttles (mouettes) connecting the right and left banks of the river. The service operates year round during daylight hours and is an inexpensive way to view the city from the water. Departures every 10-30 minutes.
Trains
The Swiss rail system is deservedly famous – a number of spectacular routes pass through and over the Alps. Gare Cornavin, Geneva’s central train station, offers rail links to the airport and efficient transportation to Bern, Paris, Milan and many other European cities. Regional trains depart for Lausanne every 15 minutes.
Boats
The Compagnie Générale de Navigation (CGN) offers steamship travel between cities along Lake Geneva. Routes operate year round; in winter the schedule is more limited. From spring through fall, it’s possible to travel from Geneva all the way to Montreux by boat (though it’s more scenic than quick).
