Mt. Etna
Often smoking, occasionally erupting, this 10,925-foot volcano is the dominant geological feature of Sicily. As one of the world’s most active volcanoes, it’s a constant reminder of the awesome power of nature. Over the centuries, eruptions have given the area a layer of rich, fertile lavic soil, host to thriving wildflowers, pine and birch groves, and some of the region’s finest produce.
There are a number of ways to experience Mt. Etna – it’s even possible to ski here in the winter! We recommend a private 4WD tour of the volcano, accompanied by a volcanologist or expert guide. If your time is limited, you can circle the base on the private Circumetnea train, which passes through several villages and offers great views, or you can drive the 120-mile route around the mountain. Hiking up to the summit is exhilarating but challenging, and should not be attempted without a guide – hot lava flows almost constantly beneath the craters.
