Venice sprawls over hundreds of low-lying islands in a lagoon. The city is free of buses, cars, and motorcycles, even bicycles. Everything and everyone moves by boat or on foot.
The Grand Canal is the main thoroughfare. The islands are also crisscrossed by 177 smaller canals and connected by 355 pedestrian bridges. The islands are grouped into six districts or sestieri, each with its own character and attractions.
A good way to get your bearings is to start with a vaporetto ride, traveling the full length of the Grand Canal. It is a wonderful way to get a sense of the city and how it functions.
We’ve included our Don’t Miss and Best Lists to wet your appetite and then divided the city into its districts. San Marco is the most popular district with good reason. But the other districts and the Lagoon Islands have much to recommend them as well. Enjoy!
