The residence of the rulers of Venice for over a thousand years, this ornate Gothic masterpiece was designed to impress. The prisons and armory are thrilling for kids, as is the famous "Bridge of Sighs" leading to the prisons – the condemned supposedly let out a sigh at their last glimpse of sunlight.

Ponte di Rialto and Mercato di Rialto
The most famous bridge in Venice crosses the Grand Canal between San Marco and San Polo. Markets stretch along both sides of the bridge and across the bridge itself.
The Lagoon Islands
The islands of the Venetian lagoons make a welcome change from the crowded city. Murano is famous for its glass, Burano for its lace, and historic Torcell with its sublime Byzantine Basilica.
