Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Although the Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine appellation was only bestowed on the village in 1929, vineyards and wine have been a village mainstay since the 14th Century when Pope Jean XXII decided to plant vines in the rocky terrain that surrounded his summer residence. Initially a secret, the vineyards started gaining recognition in the 1700's and now they are the town's main event. With 55 wineries, you can just imagine the wine tasting opportunities that lie behind every corner and down every narrow passageway.
