Les Baux de Provence
Made up of two parts, the "Dead City" and the "Live City," Les Baux de Provence crowns the rugged Alpilles Mountains. Fascinating sites abound in both parts of town, but it's the Dead City's Citadel where you'll get the most breathtaking views of the "Valley of Death," the Live City, and even the Mediterranean. Vehicles are forbidden, so park outside the Live City and wear your walking shoes.

The Castle Ruins
Dead City
Easter-June 9am-7pm; Jul-Aug 9am-8pm;
Sep-Oct 9am-7pm; Nov-Easter 9:30am-5pm
The good news is that those inside the Castle when the entry closes can stay as long as they like. Audio guides are available and well worth it. Medieval pageants and tournaments are held from mid-July through August. My boys loved the 3 giant catapults and other medieval weaponry. They got to handle a crossbow and even try out the stockades for size.
Carrieres de Lumieres
Apr-Sep 10am-7pm; Oct-Mar 10am-6pm
Closed Jan 1 2- at 6pm, Dec 25
The Carriers de Lumieres is a one-time quarry that has been converted into a truly one of a kind art exhibition space. Located just outside Les Baux de Provence, the cavernous space has housed productions of works from artists like Monet and most recently, Van Gogh.
